Must-Have Items for Family Vacations: These Important Items Can Save the Day!

School is out. Summer is here! That means vacation season! If you have kids, you know how crazy it is to pack for a vacation with your family. Whether it’s a day trip to an amusement park or zoo. A cross-country car trip, or a paradise destination, you’ll want to make sure to pack these items.

So, what do you pack for family vacations? Aside from your clothes, everyday hygiene items, insurance cards, IDs, and of course, entertainment to keep the kids occupied, you have to consider small emergencies might happen at any time. You need to be prepared in case you can’t get to a local pharmacy or store, and let’s be honest, most minor emergencies don’t require a visit to the ER or outpatient facility.

First and foremost, make sure you have everyone’s prescription medications. Take several extra days of your medications! You might decide to stay longer, have car trouble, or a delayed flight. If you don’t want to hassle with multiple vials or organizing meds into a pill organizer, read more about how our free Care-Fill medication packaging service can simplify your traveling!

If you or a family member has severe allergic reactions, make sure to take an EpiPen! For minor allergic reactions, make sure you also take Benadryl. If you have young children with you make sure to grab a bottle of liquid Benadryl or a generic brand.

You will also want some skin safety supplies. It’s summer after all… the season of cuts, bruises, and sunburns! Purchasing a pre-made first aid kit can be helpful, but they may also be missing some important items. Make sure your kit has these essentials, or add them in:

·         Adhesive bandages – in various sizes

·         Gauze

·         Triple antibiotic ointment - great for minor burns and scrapes

·         Hydrocortisone cream - for insect bites and other itches

·         Ace bandage

·         Sunscreen - lots and LOTS of sunscreen, at least SPF 30

·         Aloe – when a sunburn does happen, you’ll want aloe to help soothe it

·         Bug spray - prevent the bites before they happen

Did you know the more you scratch an insect bite the greater the chance of infection?

Other items you’ll want to make sure you pack include:

·         Ibuprofen and Tylenol – don’t forget liquid medication for small children

·         Dramamine – no one wants to pull over to clean vomit from the back seat

·         Pepto-Bismol

·         Tums

·         Thermometer

·         Small scissors

·         Tweezers

·         Tick remover

Did you know there are approximately 850 different species of ticks around the world?

·         Alcohol wipes

·         Tissues – a runny nose can hit at anytime
