4 Ways To Properly Dispose Of Your Medication And Recycle Its Packaging

Saturday, April 22nd, was Earth Day. This observance is a great reminder of how we can help make where we live a cleaner and healthier place to be. A practical and easy way to make a positive impact is the proper disposal of medication and its packaging.

  1. Take all expired or unused medication to a drug take-back location.

Five Walberg Family Pharmacies’ locations (Greenville, Jamestown, Reynolds, Mercer, and Sharon Pharmacy) have MedDrop Rx boxes; where you may discreetly deposit expired or unused prescriptions. (Find our pharmacy locations here.) If you are nowhere near any of our locations, you may find a drug take-back location (also known as a controlled substance public disposal location) using this Department of Justice database search engine.

  2. Clean and recycle your pill bottles.

Most pill bottles are made from recyclable plastic; the most common type being polypropylene, also known as No. 5 plastic. Make sure the bottles are completely empty before recycling them.

  3. Donate empty pill bottles.

Matthew 25 Ministries accepts clean, empty pill bottles of different sizes via mail or drop-off. Check out how to do this here.

  4. Reuse clean and empty pill bottles for storage or crafts.

These bottles have been used to store bobby pins, quarters, cotton swabs, cotton balls, spices, dice for games, Legos…..the list is endless. View a list of 30 different ways to reuse pill bottles here.
